about

This is the story of two people who have sincere love for each other but are no longer able to find or communicate it.

The chorus is of course a metaphor, the worm being the love they both desperately seek and the butter being the patience and ability they have to communicate and interact.

While I wrote the song in the summer of 2011, the feelings and emotions I am expressing come from a relationship that ended several years earlier. The characters themselves are not her and I but the situation is parallel. Our end was drawn out and painful, very much like what I image these two are experiencing.

The good news is the woman I am referring to is now my best friend and I am deeply grateful for having made it to the other side.

lyrics

Two Birds (Gladstone 2011)

Two birds in a tree
Only one worm in between
The bread is thick but the butter is thin
Better fix it again
Better fix it again

Every time he bleeds
From his head down to his knees
No sympathy
Better fix it again

Fix it again, he said with a grin
Retreated to the back with a bottle of gin
The door's left open but she won’t come in
Better fix it again

Two birds in a tree
Only one worm in between
The bread is thick but the butter is thin
Better fix it again
Better fix it again

Over heeled and stout
She's always down but never out
Her lips sealed in a pout
Better fix it again

She’s all shopped out, there is no doubt
Nothing left to talk about
Brand new look, he still don’t care
Better fix it again

Two birds in a tree
Only one worm in between
The bread is thick but the butter thin
Better fix it again
Better fix it again
Better fix it again
Better fix it again
