In '91 or so I was living in Pacific Beach, California with my first wife Tina. One of my favourite things to do was to walk down the beach to Crystal Pier and on the way home check in on Star Surfing, where the owner Glen had all sorts of cool vintage surfboards.

One day I wandered in to find a 12 foot tandem board hanging from the ceiling. Glorious images of Tina and I surfing together filled my head. It was $1200 and I absolutely HAD to have it. I ran home to tell her all about it and got a NO, hard stop. I should mention here that we were flat broke.

It killed me to not have the board. I felt pain, I wanted it so bad.

Ten years later I fell in love with a girl from Venezuela, Karina, who I believed was what I had been waiting for all my life. As usual however I had created a rich story for myself which neither of us could live up to.

Like with the surfboard, I went through terrible pain when faced with the reality of my situation vs. the story I had believed in. Karina is a Surfboard is my attempt to heal myself once again.
