about

We used to call this 'Bookshelf' because at the beginning all we had was King Kong Girio's idea for the chorus and the first line: 'There's a book on the shelf". He handed it off to me and I basically sat on it all winter.

A few months later I was flying somewhere and pulled a paper out of my back pocket with the line on it and the song kinda poured out of me right there.

It's an amalgam of hurt, sad and resolved feelings from various relationships, including Kong's I guess, haha. Part bitter, part melancholy, part letting go and a little bit of celebration- the best of all worlds.

The 'Sheets in the closet' line refers to a set of high-threadcount sheets I bought for a girlfriend. We broke up before I gave them to her and they sat in my closet forever. The dead dog line is about friend's of mine who divorced and never really talked again.

lyrics

All I Got (Gladstone/Girio)

All I got, I’ve been counting and it ‘aint a lot
All I got, I’ve been counting and it ‘aint a lot

There’s a book on the shelf that I never read
Sheets in the closet never made the bad
A bottle of whiskey that my grandfather had
And two cups of coffee shrinking by the bed

All I got, I’ve been counting and it ‘aint a lot
All I got, I’ve been counting and it ‘aint a lot

You told me its hurts to say the things that you said
You wrote me a letter that I never read
Its one thing to leave and another to be left
I hope that you’re happy, yeah your dog is dead

All I got, I’ve been counting and it ‘aint a lot
All I got, I’ve been counting and it ‘aint a lot

Keyboard Solo

My mother always told me I was far ahead
My father gave things he really shouldn’t have
My brother told me all about the world ahead
My sister was the one who kept a level head

All I got, I’ve been counting and it ‘aint a lot
All I got, I’ve been counting and it ‘aint a lot
